Aid for Afghanistan

Emergency aid for the people of Afghanistan

The situation in Afghanistan is extremely challenging. The population is suffering not only from the oppressive measures of the new regime, but also from acute hunger. The Swiss aid organisation “Afghanistanhilfe” is on the ground with local partners and is currently focusing its relief efforts on food distributions, in order to help as many people as possible. The entire PRONATEC Christmas donation 2021 will go towards this emergency aid.

For more than thirty years, Afghanistanhilfe has been implementing numerous aid projects in the areas of education, health, poverty reduction and emergency aid. The donations from Switzerland are used to run clinics, schools, orphanages and women's refuges. Remote villages receive clean drinking water and farmers affected by poverty are helped towards self-sufficiency with gifts of animals, especially sheep. This improves the lives of those living in poverty in a targeted and sustainable way.

Aid in a very challenging environment

Afghanistanhilfe is currently one of the last Western aid organisations left in the country. In order to be able to continue providing aid, its local project partners are in contact with the local representatives of the Taliban. Even though the Afghan economy and banking system have collapsed, Afghanistanhilfe has found a safe way to carry on sending money into the country. As a result, the charity has been able to keep all aid projects running, despite major challenges.

Emergency aid to combat acute hunger crisis

The UN estimates that over 20 million of the population of approximately 36 million are currently suffering from hunger. The situation is catastrophic. After the Taliban took power, many people lost their jobs, or stopped being paid. In addition, the cost of living has more than doubled in the last three months. After a summer of drought, even the last food supplies have been used up.

Afghanistanhilfe is therefore currently focusing its relief efforts on emergency aid in the form of food distributions in order to support as many people as possible. Its local partners are working non-stop, supporting people despite the huge challenges.

Accepted and effective, thanks to local partners

Afghanistanhilfe implements all its aid projects with local project partners — in the conviction that local organisations have a better idea of what the people on the ground need and how best to provide aid in a way that is appropriate for the country. This form of cooperation ensures that the aid given is sustainable and has a long-term impact.

We know how lucky we are to have safe homes in Switzerland, and are grateful for the chance to help with our Christmas donation.
